Edinburgh University Press is among the leading academic publishers in the UK, rooted within one of Britain’s oldest and most distinguished centres of learning; the University of Edinburgh. They publish books and journals across a range of subject areas in the humanities and social sciences sectors.
After designing an eight-page brochure to celebrate their 70th year as a publisher, Edinburgh University Press approached Firefly to produce two short animations that would promote their publications across their website, social media channels and at various events and conferences.
From sketching the initial storyboards, we created detailed digital versions and all the illustrative assets needed to build the animations. Utilising The University of Edinburgh’s typography and colour palette, we created a friendly and inclusive design and sourced some upbeat instrumental music for each video.
Aimed at prospective customers (mainly academic librarians), the first animation features their 2019 Edinburgh Journal Collection. As well as showcasing a number of the original journal covers throughout the video, we also highlighted some key facts and benefits of their publishing services, including the specific subject areas that are covered by the collection.
The second animation illustrates the 60 years of humanities research encompassed within their Edinburgh Archive Collection. Set in Princes St Gardens, the animation begins by panning down on a view of Edinburgh Castle and settling on a person sitting in the gardens. It focuses on a user swiping through the Edinburgh Archive on a tablet device, while featuring key facts about the collection.
