Rooted within the prestigious University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh University Press is among the leading scholarly publishers in the UK. Founded over 50 years ago, they publish books and journals across the humanities and social sciences.
After designing a brochure to celebrate their 70th year as a publisher, Edinburgh University Press approached Firefly to produce two short animations to promote their publications across their website, social media channels and at various events and conferences. Each animation was aimed at prospective customers, primarily academic librarians.
After sketching initial story boards, we created detailed digital versions of all of the illustrative assets we needed to build the animations. Drawing upon the University of Edinburgh’s existing typography and colour palette, we created a friendly and inclusive design. In order to bring the animations to life and captivate the viewer we sourced upbeat instrumental music, which added depth to the video.
The first animation features the publishers 2019 Edinburgh Journal Collection. As well as showcasing a number of original journal covers, we highlighted key facts and benefits of their publishing services, including the specific subject areas covered by the collection. We carefully considered our use of vibrant colour, typographic hierarchy and kinetic typography. This helped to guide the viewer through the animation and communicate all information in a clear, succinct and engaging way.
The second animation illustrates the 60 years of humanities research encompassed within the Edinburgh Archive Collection. Set in Princes St Gardens, the animation begins by panning down on a view of Edinburgh Castle and settling on a person sitting in the gardens. It focuses on a user swiping through the Edinburgh Archive on a tablet device, whilst featuring key facts about the collection. This imagery reinforces Edinburgh University Press’ roots and adds a human touch to the animation, positioning them as an approachable and reliable organisation.
