Forestry Commission
Forestry Commission Scotland developed a Forest Kindergarten programme across Central Scotland, which aimed to promote local woodlands as an environment for young children to play and learn.
The programme not only provides an opportunity to experience outdoor activities but benefits young children’s physical and mental development.

The Brief
Firefly was selected by Forestry Commission Scotland following a tender to rebrand Forest Kindergarten and design printed and digital collateral to promote the programme. The print communications detail how Forest Kindergarten can help children to establish a lasting connection with the natural world.

The Creative Outcome
Whilst the programme is aimed at children, the target audiences for the communications was teachers and parents. We therefore designed the leaflets to appear friendly and welcoming.
The intricate, detailed illustrations and graphics incorporated into the print communications create a handmade aesthetic. This is reinforced by the rough, recycled paper texture technique, which gives the leaflets a natural look and feel. We combined the illustrative elements with dynamic, eye-catching photography. This adds a human touch to the branding, whilst helping to provide readers with a clear picture of the beautiful settings and the kinds of activities children would take part in during the programme.
We combined a bold natural brush script typestyle for impactful headings, with a highly legible modern typeface for introductory and body copy. We also utilised clear typographic hierarchy to highlight key information about the programme and guide readers through the leaflet.
The distinctive design we developed was rolled out across a range of Forest Kindergarten’s communications, including leaflets, folders, banner stands, PowerPoint presentations, USB cards, certificates and backpacks. This consistency across all touch points helped to establish a strong brand identity, which resonated with the brands target audience.
