Universities Scotland

Membership organisation, Universities Scotland, is the representative body of Scotland’s 19 higher education institutions, working with Principals and Directors.

The organisation develop policy in the higher education sector and campaign publicly on issues in the interest of their members.

Zoomed-in brochure spread with photo of a girl throwing a ball. The text on the ball stated "Yes ball games", all in capital letters.

The Brief

We were commissioned to create an A4 report, to be distributed in both digital and print formats, surrounding the subject of Internationalisation at Home. The report outlines 18 case studies told from the perspectives of different individuals.

The Creative Outcome

The layout and design developed for the report was driven primarily by the content. We created a professional and engaging design that reflected the Universities Scotland brand and captured the attention of their target audience.

The clean, modern typography helps to ensure the report is highly legible across all formats, whilst the use of typographic hierarchy places emphasis on important information, guiding readers through the text. We adopted a vivid colour palette, highlighting extensive sections of text and key takeaways to engage readers. Moreover, we facilitated ease of use by incorporating graphs, displaying statistics in a clear and easily digestible way.

Mosaic-like patterns with iconographies including a book, globe, brain, dart, football, mountain, laptop, film camera, magnifying glass, masks, windmill, graduation hat, science, hospital and music.

Playful, welcoming and inclusive, the carefully crafted illustrations inject a sense of fun into the report. The linear, refined illustrations are displayed within a grid graphic device and reflect themes specific to Universities Scotland, conveying a range of subject matter, from dentistry and medicine, to the arts and sport. Interwoven into each page, the aesthetically pleasing and eye-catching illustrations help to differentiate the report.

We incorporated bright and dynamic photographs of people to add a personal touch to the report, creating a friendly and accessible look and feel. The report combines professional headshots of key individuals and more organic action shots, helping to connect and resonate with Universities Scotland’s broad target audience.

“Ben and the team at Firefly have been great – creative, friendly, fun and professional from start to finish of our label design project.

Despite us providing a rather vague brief, they completely got what we were looking to achieve and delivered an excellent creative proposal which we are now moving ahead with. They worked with pace and their communication was good throughout. I wouldn’t hesitate to work with them again and would strongly recommend them for any creative requirements.”
