Edinburgh University Press is among the leading academic publishers in the UK, rooted within one of Britain’s oldest and most distinguished centres of learning; The University of Edinburgh. They publish books and journals across a range of subjects within the humanities and social sciences sectors.

The Brief

Ahead of celebrating their 70th year as a publisher, Edinburgh University Press approached Firefly to design a brochure focusing on their history, core aims and personality as a business. These intricate, monochrome illustrations allude to the organisation’s longstanding publishing history.

The Creative Outcome

Intricate, monochrome illustrations of the publisher’s previous and current office buildings, by artist Jennifer Court, adorn the front and inside covers. These are combined with bold colours, which take the form of playful, organic shapes, adding a contemporary edge to the design and capturing readers’ attention.

The clean layout and highly legible typography guide readers through the content, whilst photography of the team reflects the approachability of the organisation. The dynamic brochure design simultaneously reflects their longstanding publishing history and fresh approach to publishing.

Since designing this brochure, we have created two short animations which showcase the organisation’s 2019 Journal Collection and Archive Collection.
